The destructible environments that seemed gimmicky and useless now become ferocious weapons as you surge through them to gain power points and XP, leaps and turns churn up your tyres in order to catch with rivals and frag them from behind. Instead of reducing your race to a churning spin and a crash into a wall, you’ll likely, and swiftly, bend round the corner, losing very little of the huge wad of speed you’ve accumulated.Īnd, suddenly, Ridge Racer Unbounded makes a lot of fucking sense. But, no, Ridge Racer Unbounded wants you to cling on to the drift button for the whole turn, and maybe cling on to the brake, and cling on to the accelerator.
As you spin wildly round corners, you’ll want to tap the drift and apply the brakes. The drift button – dare we say its name out loud! - is counter-instinctive. And when you do figure it out – the button will change your life.
You’re introduced to ‘the button’ early on in the game, but there’s no indication of how you should use it. See, as much as we don’t enjoy being babied by a game, Ridge Racer Unbounded’s lack of tutorial is incredibly detrimental to your initial enjoyment of the game.
